Hanoi Language

With a population of more than 3 million, Hanoi in Vietnam will impress you with its relics of history, enthralling beauty of its scenic beauty and imprints of French-colonial rule in the architecture of its buildings. However, before you begin planning your tour, you must have an in-depth knowledge of Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, the process of which you may kick off with Hanoi Language.

Hanoi in Vietnam centered around Hoàn Ki?m Lake, has a history dated back to 3000 years. Hanoi became free in 1945 and then served as the capital of North Vietnam for some time till it became the capital of a united Vietnam. Vietnamese is the Hanoi Language. When the country was under French colonization, Vietnamese, the national and official language of Vietnam, was known as Annamese. Originating from the Austroasiatic family of languages, most of the Vietnamese vocabulary has been borrowed from Chinese because the Chinese writing system was used for the script. Later, the Vietnamese writing system was evolved by adapting a version of the Latin alphabet.

Vietnamese was originally used by the natives of the area along the Red River in today's northern part of Vietnam. Gradually, it imbibed influences by Indic and Malayo-Polynesian languages and then the Chinese language when under Chinese regime. During this time, Chinese characters were used in Vietnamese language in a method followed in Japan and Korea. Only when the country became open to interaction with the West, the Qu?c Ng? system with Romanized style of script was introduced in the 17th century. The original Vietnamese language also was influenced by some French words introduced during the French regime in the 19th century. It was only in early 20th century, when the Romanized script began to be used for writing Vietnamese language, which acquired an easier form later for use among the common men.
