Bagan is one of the greatest architectural sites in Asia and is without doubt one of the highlights on any Myanmar vacation.  Formally known as the ‘Pagan’ Empire, it was part of a thriving culture throughout the 11th and 13th centuries when over 10,000 Buddhist temples were built. Today 2,000 of these religious relics remain.

Local villagers continue to live and work on the plains of Bagan, which is in contrast to other wondrous temple sites in Asia such as Angkor Wat in Cambodia or Borbordour in Indonesia. This living history creates a unique atmosphere and a photographic marvel.

We recommended visiting Bagan for at least 2 days in order to explore the magnificent temples, watch a sunset overlooking the Irrawaddy River and to visit craft villages and local markets.

If you are lucky enough to be in Myanmar during the months of October through to March, a hot-air balloon over Bagan is a once in a lifetime experience, and highly recommended.

There is however so much more to discover in Bagan beyond the temples; boat cruises on the Irrawaddy River, visits to the ‘Spirit Gods’ at Mount Popa, or pedal through local villages on a bike.

Our Myanmar tour specialists will give you the best advice on where to visit in Bagan and when. Our specialists can provide you with what no other travel agent can — expertise founded on living in Myanmar.
